Understanding Ideal Weight

"Ideal weight" is a concept that has several popular formulas. This calculator uses the Hamwi formula, a commonly used estimation, to provide a healthy weight range based on your height and gender.

How It's Calculated

The Hamwi formula assigns a baseline weight for the first 5 feet of height and adds a set amount for each additional inch. This provides a general guideline but does not account for individual factors like frame size, muscle mass, or age.

Not a Definitive Measure

Remember that this is just an estimate. It's a good starting point for discussion, but it's not a substitute for professional medical advice. A healthy weight is different for everyone, and tools like BMI and Body Fat Percentage can provide additional context.

Logic & Formulas

This calculator uses the Hamwi formula, which was developed in 1964. It provides a quick estimate of ideal body weight (IBW). The formulas require height to be over 5 feet.

For Males:

IBW (kg) = 48 kg + 2.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet

For Females:

IBW (kg) = 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg for each inch over 5 feet

The calculator first converts any metric height input into inches, calculates the ideal weight in kilograms (kg) using the appropriate formula, and then also converts the final result to pounds (lbs) for display.
