Understanding Body Fat

Body fat percentage is a measure of fitness level, since it is the only body measurement which directly calculates a person's relative body composition without regard to height or weight. This calculator uses the U.S. Navy method to estimate body fat.

Why It Matters

While BMI is a good general indicator of healthy weight, body fat percentage gives a clearer picture of your health and fitness. A high body fat percentage can be a risk factor for various health issues, even for individuals with a "normal" BMI.

How It's Measured

This calculator uses measurements of your height, neck, and waist (and hips for females) to estimate body fat. For the most accurate results, use a flexible measuring tape and take each measurement two or three times to find the average.

Logic & Formulas

This calculator uses the body fat formula developed by the U.S. Navy, which relies on body circumference measurements. The formulas are different for males and females and use the base-10 logarithm (log10). All measurements are first converted to centimeters (cm) if provided in inches.

For Males:

Body Fat % = 86.010 * log10(Waist - Neck) - 70.041 * log10(Height) + 36.76

For Females:

Body Fat % = 163.205 * log10(Waist + Hip - Neck) - 97.684 * log10(Height) - 78.387
