Understanding Break-Even Point

The break-even point is the production level where total revenues equal total expenses. In other words, it's the point where your business neither makes a profit nor a loss.

Components

  • Fixed Costs: Expenses that stay the same regardless of volume (rent, salaries).
  • Variable Costs: Expenses that increase with every unit sold (materials, shipping).
  • Selling Price: What you charge the customer for one unit.

Logic & Formulas

The formula for break-even units is:

Break-Even Units = Fixed Costs / (Selling Price - Variable Cost)

The denominator (Selling Price - Variable Cost) is known as the Contribution Margin.
